FREDERICK ANDREW AMOORE

BISHOP OF BLOEMFONTEIN 1967-82

 

Frederick Amoore, son of Harold and Emily (nee Lyon) Amoore was born in Worthing on 6 June 1913 and was one of the earliest entrants to Worthing High School for Boys. He was also one of the first to go on to University. After graduating BA from Leeds University he went on to study at Mirfield Theological College near Leeds.

 

He was ordained priest at a service held in Southwark Cathedral in September 1937. His first clerical appointments were as curate to churches in Clapham, South London, and Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After that he was Rector of St Saviour’s in East London, South Africa and it was in East London that his wife Mary (nee Dobson) gave birth to twin sons on 16 February 1950. Later that year he was appointed Dean of the Cathedral church of St Alban the Martyr, Pretoria.

 

In 1967, when serving as Canon of the cathedral and the executive officer of the Province of South Africa, he was appointed Bishop of Bloemfontein by a newly-formed delegation of five members of the Bloemfontein diocesan elective assembly. He held that position until his retirement in 1982.
