C S Harridge

Subject: Woodwork

C S Harridge arrived from Huntingdonshire in 1945 to join the staff to teach woodwork, bringing with him experience in both industry and teaching.

He is remembered as a very good teacher of his subject and for his strong personality which made itself felt in the general life of the school. Soon after his arrival he took command of the school Army Cadet Force as Captain and continued in command of the Combined Cadet Force that was formed in 1949, being promoted to Major the following year.

Under his leadership the Corps won considerable praise at annual inspections and provided senior boys with a helpful introduction to the period of National Service that they had to undertake after leaving school. Several boys made the Army their career, and it was during Major Harridge’s tenure of command that the first boys from the school went to Sandhurst.

Among his many other contributions to the life of the school and the staff common room he ran the school Stage Craft Society, was Stage Manager for many of the school’s dramatic productions, and took part in many of the school Geographical and Geological expeditions.

Sadly his activities were restricted by illness during his final years at the school. He retired in 1964 and died somewhat prematurely a fewyears later.
