WILLIE WILDASH: RFU President 2012-2013

Willie Wildash (Angle, 1953-61) was elected the 2012-2013 President of the Rugby Football Union, the ruling body of the game. He began his rugby career in earnest as hooker in the WHSB First XV. While still at school he also played seniot rugby for the Old Azurians' RFC. Dave Barnett was captain and match chauffeur. Willie recalls returning home in Dave’s van feeling “well refreshed”.

Willie moved to Dorset in 1961 as an Admiralty research scientist, but continued to be "well-refreshed" playing for Weymouth RFC. He moved into the back row for Salford University and played for Dorset and several Royal Navy sides.

At 32, he had a severe knee injury and turned to refereeing, and in 1973 he served on the Dorset and Wilts RFU, playing a constructive role in the administration of the game.

His long service culminated in his election to the top non-playing job. During his time in office as President of the RFU he was called upon to present many awards and trophies, but perhaps his most challenging engagement was at Thurrock rugby club where he acted as scrum half to a world record breaking scrum of 584 Club players and members.

His wife, Mary, has been a great support in his professional and rugby life. They have a daughter, Nicole.
